's justice correspondent pete williams following overnight developments in the investigation. pete, good morning. it seems there is no clearer picture as to who may be behind this. >> i think that's certainly true although there is high hope that they will be able to answer that shortly. they know for certain the attack involved two bombs, but many other packages found on the street were deemed suspicious and destroyed and that took a lot of time last night. there were many packages to check because after the explosions officials say many people simply dropped what they were carrying and ran, leaving their packages behind. there were conflicting accounts whether investigators found two unexploded bombs. this morning a senior law enforcement official says there were no unexploded devices, just the two that went off. several officials say the bombs that went off included shrapnels to multiply the injuries, bebes and ball bearings. investigators are investigating video to see if they can see individuals placing the packages. there is a video from the back carrying two backpacks but it's too

not to take action on their own. joining us is pete williams. this is a big development today. what is the latest? >> it is a big development. the pictures don't show crystal clear view of the faces, of course. there's pictures the fbi has not released. they do believe they have images showing the man in the white hat planting the second bomb, the one in the front of the restaurant. by the way, we have seen that picture from our affiliate in boston that shows the garbage bag next to the mailbox. they say that is -- now, they can say that is not the bomb. the bomb was actually planted on the other side of that barrier. it's right near there but just on the other side. in the release of these pictures, then, they've chosen which ones they think will be most helpful to people in being able to recognize them. granted, the faces are never crystal clear. they're hoping the totality of the clothes and where they were and what they were doing will cause some people to call in. they are getting the response that they asked for or getting a response, anyway. lots of names, but having names an

'll get to nbc justice correspondent pete williams. as i turn to you, this news conference is going on, we know that officials did conduct two bomb sweeps in the area yesterday, one before the race and then one around the finish line they said about an hour before runners started to cross the finish line. what else can you tell us? >> despite the confusion overnight, they did not find more than two bombs, the two that went off, the confusion comes from the fact that as the bombs went off, people dropped packages they were holding and ran away. when police arrived on scene, they had all of these packages they had to check. they didn't take a lot of time. they simply destroyed them if there were any questions. some confusion last night that there were some unexploded devices. now they say that's not the case. as for revere, an apartment belonging to a student here who was 20 years old from saudi arabia, he was seen running from the scene, authorities say they did not find anything that search to indicate that he had any involvement in the bombing. he's been questioned all night. the interest

. this morning fbi agents are making significant progress. pete williams is nbc's just correspondent. pete. good morning. >> good morning, matt. the fbi is very eager to identify, find and talk to two young men who displayed the behavior they're looking for, someone who walks up to the spot, leaves a backpack away and walks away just before one of the bombs goes off. the fbi says it has pictures from several different sources showing the same thing happening at the spot where one of the bombs exploded. the sequence of explosions, 13 seconds apart can be heard on this videotape of universal sports network technicians making final preparations to cover the end of the marathon event. a key image investigators say was captured by a surveillance camera with a bird's-eye view mounted high up across the street from the second bombing site. officials say it shows a young man talking on his cell phone who sets down what appears to be a heavy backpack and dashes away moments before the second bomb goes off. because he was on a cell phone, investigators are checking the logs of the hundreds of people using

news justice correspondent pete williams is outside the high court. this surrounds a party based in utah, myriad genetics. tell us about this case. >> reporter: they have a pat owned a gene used to test for the likelihood that a person will get either breast or ovarian cancer. the question is, can they patent the gene itself? and it would appear from today's argument, that the supreme court is prepared to say no. now, myriad has said, if the supreme court rules against and it several other companies are lining up against it, would it make it much harder to attract investment. finding these genes and discovering the tests and cures is very expensive. the court seemed worry that you could patent something that is basically not the work of man. it is the work of nature. there is a dispute about whether you isolate the gene, the majority of the justices didn't seem to think it is new enough to warrant a patent. it would be pun thing they said, if you found a plant in the amazon that had a chemical that could cure cancer. you might be able to get a patent on the resulting drug but you
